Reflection on Revelation 21:10, 22–22:5
In this concluding book of the Bible, the apostle John is taken to a high mountain where he sees the holy city, the New Jerusalem, descending from heaven.
Unlike earthly cities, this city is not built by human hands but is crafted by God, radiant with divine glory. The absence of a physical temple within it is profound: “I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.” Hence God's presence is totally integrated with human existence, there are no barriers, no need for rituals, to access Him.
The imagery of the river of life and the tree of life is reminiscent of Eden, yet now it is not a garden but a city—a redeemed, perfected world. The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations, symbolizing a peace which transcends former divisions, a unity that only God can bring.
The vision culminates in the most intimate promise: “They will see His face.”
Throughout Scripture, seeing God's face was a hope deferred, often too holy for human eyes. Here, it is proffered as the reward of the faithful.
The passage offers both comfort and challenge. It comforts with the assurance that suffering, death, and darkness will be no more. Simultaneously it challenges us to live now in light of that future—to be people of the light, bearers of healing, and seekers of God's face even as we await its full revelation.
