A Prayer for the week from Matt

Lord God, as we think about current affairs, we pray for our leaders. We think particularly of our government, having to make difficult decisions on a very regular basis, asking that you’d fill them with wisdom, appreciation of what things are like across the country, and help them to make decisions, as best as they can. Give them an understanding of a wide breadth of issues, with good advisors and supporters. May we as a country encourage- not just criticise what happens, and we pray that in as much of the decision-making as possible good would widely prevail. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection on Luke 12 13-21 (Parable of the Rich Fool)

Key Verse:
“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’” — Luke 12:20 (NIV)

In this parable, Jesus tells the story of a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. The man’s solution was to build bigger barns to store his wealth and live comfortably for years to come. But God interrupts his plans with a jarring truth: his life would end that very night, and all his careful preparations would be for nothing.

This story isn’t just about greed—it’s about misplaced trust. The man thought his abundance meant he was secure. But his wealth could not extend his life by even a day.

Jesus warns that life is not measured by how much we own. Instead, He calls us to be “rich toward God.” This means valuing eternal things over temporary ones: faith, love, generosity, and our relationship with God.

Prayer:

Lord, help me not to chase after things that fade. Teach me to place my trust in You, not in my wealth or achievements. Show me how to live a life that is rich toward You—one marked by faith, generosity, and love. Keep me mindful that each day is a gift and help me use what I have to serve You and others. Amen.
