A Reflection for Epiphany
Epiphany celebrates revelation—the moment when the light of Christ is shown not only to Israel, but to the whole world. In the story of the Magi, we see seekers from afar drawn by a star, attentive to a quiet sign that points beyond itself. They remind us that God often meets us on the road of our searching, using the language we are able to understand.
The Magi’s journey was not straightforward. It involved uncertainty, detours, and even danger. Yet they persisted, guided by hope and curiosity rather than certainty. Epiphany invites us to trust that God is present even when the path is unclear, and that faithful attention—watching for the “stars” in our own lives—can lead us to truth.
When the Magi finally encounter the child, their response is worship and generosity. They offer gifts not to gain something in return, but because encountering Christ reorders their priorities. Epiphany asks us a similar question: having glimpsed God’s light, what do we offer with our lives? What needs to be laid down, and what new direction might we take when we “go home by another way”?
Ultimately, Epiphany is about light that cannot be contained. It shines across borders, cultures, and expectations. It reminds us that God is always being revealed—often beyond the familiar—and calls us to live as bearers of that light in a world still learning how to see.
