A Reflection on Matthew 28:18-20 the Great Commission

The Great Commission is not given in a moment of triumph, but in a moment of quiet encounter. The risen Jesus meets his disciples on a mountain in Galilee—some worship, some doubt and into this mixture of faith and uncertainty Jesus speaks his final command.

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” The mission of the Church begins not with our confidence or competence, but with Christ’s authority. We are not sent out on our own initiative; we are sent because Jesus reigns. The task of making disciples flows from who he is, not from who we think we are.

To “go and make disciples” is more than spreading ideas or increasing numbers. It is an invitation to walk with others into a lifelong relationship with Christ—through baptism, teaching, and shared life. The Church’s mission is relational and patient, grounded in formation rather than persuasion alone.

Yet the most consoling words of the Great Commission come at the end: “And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” The risen Lord does not merely give instructions and depart; he remains present. Mission is sustained not by human energy, but by divine companionship.

The Great Commission reminds us that every Christian life is missionary. Whether in public proclamation or quiet witness, in distant lands or daily routines, we are sent people. We go not alone, not empty-handed, and not without hope—for Christ goes with us, and his presence is our strength.
